Former Muhammed Ali Boxing Opponent to Speak in Lauderdale-By-TheSea

Debbie H - Monday, August 08, 2016

Lauderdale-By-The-Sea's Speaker Series is hosting a former boxer on Saturday, August 13 who fought the champ.

Former heavyweight boxer Chuck Wepner, whose heavyweight title fight with Muhammad Ali was the inspiration for the movie Rocky, will talk about his life and boxing career on Saturday, Aug. 13 at 7PM in Jarvis Hall, 4505 N. Ocean Drive.

Wepner's life is the subject of The Bleeder, a new movie being released later this year starring actors Liev Schreiber and Naomi Watts.

Wepner went 15 rounds with Ali in 1975 and knocked the champ down in the ninth round, although photos later supported Ali's claim that Wepner had stepped on his foot. Ali later opened up cuts above Wepner's eyes and broke his nose. Ali won the fight when he knocked Wepner down in the 15th round, a technical knockout.

ESPN's 2011 documentary about Wepner was titled The Real Rocky.
