Spring may not have arrived yet but the members of the Lauderdale-by-the-Sea Garden Club have started early. They’re hosting their annual Rummage Sale on Saturday, Jan. 31 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Jarvis Hall.
The event is the club’s major fundraiser and therefore the most important event of the year for them.
“We are a non-profit. Our four-hour Rummage Sale yields enough to run our three gardens and donate to various Garden Club-related causes throughout the year,” said Club President Chris Villata.
It takes a united effort of two chairpeople and about 10 committees to put together the event which means just about every member is involved. The sale features items like clothing, linens, jewelry, books, electronics, baked goods and white elephants. They also host several raffles during the sale.
The club was founded nearly 50 years ago and currently has 40 members. The group consists of people who love to garden and love flowers. Many of them joined because they were Garden Club members in the town where they lived before migrating to Florida. Still others joined because their friends were members and spoke frequently about the club.
The members meet every Monday from October to May at 9:15 a.m. They serve coffee and cake and host speakers on nature-related topics as well as on the fine points of flower arranging.
With a half a century in existence, it’s only fitting to come out and support this fantastic group that is responsible for the city’s beautiful gardens. It is those gardens that attract new visitors to the town and provide quality of life to town residents.
Do your part, come out and support this great cause!
