Jan. 1 - July 21, 2017
The Town of Lauderdale-By-The-Sea, Reef Photo and By The Sea Realty are excited again about sponsoring a new underwater photo and video competition this year!
The photo and video contests are free to enter! The winners will be announced during the Town's BugFest mini-season dive festival on Friday, July
28 in Jarvis Hall.
We separated the contest from BugFest in the hopes of also attracting entries from photographers who may be sensitive to the activity of hunting spiny lobsters.
All photographers who sign-up and submit at least one underwater photo or video.
Submit your 30 second video promoting scuba diving or free diving in the Town of Lauderdale-By-The-Sea. Your video must be exactly 30 seconds in length and can include some topside footage. If you plan to use music in your video, please be sure to use the royalty free (legal) music that is available at www.audiomicro.com.
The first place winner of this video contest will have their video aired on an upcoming episode of ScubaNation in 2018!
The preferred video format is 1080p HD, but you may submit in 720p. Good luck!
Photographers will retain all rights to the photos they submit, but must agree to sign a photo or video release allowing the Town to use their pictures or video to promote scuba diving and beach diving in Lauderdale-By-The-Sea. Every effort will be made to list photo credits for the photographers when the photos are used.
Prizes and/or gift certificates will be awarded to the best overall photo and the winners in each category. The BugFest-By-The-Sea organizing committee reserves the right to upgrade the prizes for the photo and video contests. Other prizes include dive gear, charter boat dive trips and/or gift certificates. This year's prizes so far include:
- A 3-day photo workshop.
- A 3-day video workshop.

PHOTO CONTEST RULES
The contest started Jan. 1 and ends July 21. All entries must be submitted by 10AM.Photos taken between Jan. 1 and the submission deadline are eligible. The photos must be shot off Lauderdale-By-The-Sea’s 2.4 miles of coastline. The southernmost building in Town is the Fountainhead Condo, 3900 N. Ocean Drive, which is about a half-mile south of Commercial Boulevard. Our northernmost building is the Maulani Condo, 1398 S. Ocean Blvd., which is about 2-miles north of Commercial. For an offshore reference point, Anglin’s Pier in Lauderdale-By-The-Sea is located at Commercial Boulevard. Our downtown area does not have any buildings taller than three stories, which makes it easy to distinguish for someone on a boat offshore looking west.

This is a photography contest, not a Photoshop contest. Photoshop (or similar imaging software) has become a necessary tool for processing images, but it is not a substitute for good photography. We are providing these guidelines on what modification is acceptable and what is not.
Limited global changes including color temperature and balance, brightness, contrast, sharpening, saturation and tone.
Rotation, flip and flop.
Limited removal of backscatter only. No removal of divers, fish, etc.
Cropping is allowed, but not more than 30 percent. Keep in mind judges often frown on significant cropping.
Cutting and pasting sections of images from another part of an image or from another image.
No cloning objects or composite images. For example, moving fish, a reef or any other elements of a photo, adding a glow to simulate a flashlight, or adding a scuba diver or animal silhouette in the background.
All marine life subjects must be alive and in their natural environment. No pool or aquarium shots.
All photos must be taken in the ocean off the Town of Lauderdale-By-The-Sea.
You must be in the water at the time when taking the photo (no pole cam shots).
Entrants, by submitting images, grant permission to the Town of Lauderdale-By-The-Sea to use entries for the promotion of diving in the Town.
All rights remain with the photographer.
The Town is not interested in obtaining any legal rights for the photo or video, selling the photos or producing a book.
The contest will be judged shortly after the deadline.
